The real Social Security crisis is actually a federal government debt and budget crisis. Since the mid-1980’s, the Social Security Trust Fund has been accumulating due to surpluses in Social Security (taxes > benefits paid). These Social Security surpluses (the trust fund) have been used to help fund other government spending and reduce the amount of other government borrowing.
